How Your Data Is Handled

This self-assessment tool is designed with your privacy as the highest priority. We follow the principle of data minimization — we collect only what is strictly necessary, and the complete list of what that means is in the next section, so you never have to take the phrase on trust. The assessment is free, requires no email or account, and all scoring happens entirely in your browser.

What we collect — the complete list

When we say “strictly necessary”, this is the whole of it:

• Browsing and taking the assessment: nothing. No account, no email, no cookies, no advertising trackers, no fingerprinting. Your quiz answers are processed in your browser and are never sent to us. We do count anonymous page views (see below), which records that a page was opened — never who opened it, and never anything you answered.
• Hosting logs. Like virtually every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) keeps standard, short-lived technical logs — such as IP address, request time, and page requested — which exist to run and secure the service. We do not use them to identify or profile visitors.
• If you buy a product. Payment is processed by Stripe under Stripe's own privacy policy; your name, email, and card details go to Stripe, not to us. What we receive is a checkout session identifier and its paid status, which we use to unlock your purchase.
• If you email results to yourself. Your email address and the results pass through our email provider (Resend) solely to deliver that one email. We do not store the address or add it to any list.
• If you opt in to research. Your summary scores only — no answers to individual questions, and no name, email, IP address, or other identifier attached.
• On your own device. Your browser's local storage holds your quiz autosave (with your consent — deleted after 7 days if you don't finish, or 90 days once you do), your display preferences, and — after a purchase — a record that unlocks what you bought. This stays on your device; it is storage we read from your browser, not data sent to us.

Client-Side Processing

All quiz responses are processed entirely within your web browser. Your answers never leave your device. Scores are calculated locally using JavaScript, and no data is transmitted to any server during the assessment.

Session Recovery

To allow you to pause and resume the quiz, your responses are temporarily stored in your browser's local storage. An unfinished assessment is deleted automatically after 7 days. A finished one is kept for 90 days, because it is the only copy that exists anywhere — we hold none — and it is what your Field Guide is rebuilt from if you bought one. Resetting the quiz deletes it immediately, either way. It is never sent to any server.

Your display preferences (color theme, light or dark mode, reduced motion) are also saved in local storage so the site remembers how you like it. These preferences contain no personal information and never leave your device.

Optional Email Feature

If you choose to email your results to yourself, your email address and results are sent to our email service provider solely for the purpose of delivering that single email. Your email address is not stored, added to any mailing list, or used for any other purpose. We require explicit consent before sending.

The Battery Check newsletter

If you sign up for our monthly newsletter, The Battery Check, the only thing we collect is your email address, and the only thing we do with it is send you that one email a month. We use double opt-in: when you submit the form we send a confirmation link and store nothing until you click it, so an address can never be added to the list without the owner's explicit action. Your confirmed email lives only with our email provider (Resend), which acts as our processor and is the same provider described above — there is no separate database. Every issue includes a one-click unsubscribe link that removes you immediately, no questions asked, and you can also email us to be removed. We never sell or share the list, and we never use your address for anything other than the newsletter.

Optional Research Contribution

After completing the assessment, you can choose to contribute your results to community research. If — and only if — you press that button, we store your summary scores and levels (the same numbers shown on your results page). We never store your answers to individual questions, and the contribution carries no name, email, account, IP address, or any other identifier. Aggregate findings from this data will always be published free.

What We Count, and What We Don't

We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It sets no cookies, stores no IP addresses, and creates no identifier that follows you between sites or between visits — so it can tell us that a page was opened 400 times, and never that you opened it. We use it for one thing: knowing which pages people read and how many people who start the assessment reach the end, because without that we are guessing about what to build next.

We do not use advertising networks, tracking cookies, cross-site trackers, or browser fingerprinting; we do not build profiles of visitors; and we never send your quiz answers anywhere. Apart from these anonymous counts, the only visitor-related data that exists anywhere is the standard hosting logs described above.

There is no advertising on this site, and there never will be. We recommend books, apps, and tools because we believe they are genuinely useful — nobody pays to be recommended. Some outbound links are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Those links are marked as sponsored and disclosed on the pages where they appear, and affiliate income never decides what we recommend — it is a side-effect of recommendations we would make anyway, not the reason for them.

Your Rights

For most visitors we hold nothing about you, so there is nothing to access, export, or delete. Where something does exist, you have the usual rights over it: purchase records live with Stripe and can be queried through us; a results email is delivered and not retained; research contributions carry no identifier, which means they protect you completely but also cannot be traced back to you to be individually deleted.

The data controller for this site is Valley Mountain LLC, based in the United States. Our service providers — Stripe (payments), Resend (email delivery), and Vercel (hosting) — process data on our behalf under their own terms, in the United States. If you are in the UK, EU, or another region with data-protection rights such as access, correction, erasure, or objection, email us and we will honor the request — the practices above mean there is rarely anything to act on, and we would rather show you that than claim it.

Payments

If you buy one of our two products, the payment is processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. All we receive is a checkout session identifier, which we use once to confirm the purchase was paid — your quiz answers are never part of that. Stripe handles your payment information under its own privacy policy. Our terms cover the rest.
